This is my second Sonia Sanchez poetry book! I liked this one a lot more than the one I read last week, “morning haiku” because she included short stories/prose poems.
I feel like when I’m just reading through a poetry book, it’s hard to connect to most of it. There will be poems that stick out here and there, but for the most part, I just read right through them. Sanchez including personal anecdotes in this helped me connect to her stories more. There was a specific story titled, “Bubba” that I really loved and I felt the emotion that she poured into it.
Learning more about her, she is the type of person to be open and honest about the good and the bad. She writes about everyday interactions that can be both uncomfortable and beautiful in some ways. I really loved this book.
