Summary: A woman hires a maid to do the housework, cook meals, take care of her daughter, etc. This woman acts completely unreasonably towards the maid, and others perceive her as crazy. But no one knows the full truth. So, we learn throughout the book about what’s really going on in their house and who is responsible.
My thoughts:
I started this last weekend after picking it up from the library, and my first thoughts were not great. Nothing really kept me interested until around 140 pages. It’s 325 pages altogether, so I feel like the interest should’ve come quicker in a shorter book like that.
The book also felt a little like a child wrote it. The language felt like it wasn’t well thought out & that was deterring me from wanting to continue reading.
***SPOILERS***
The only thing that piqued my interest was when the housemaid, Millie, and the husband, Andy, went off on their little affair night. I was interested to see how that played out and if the wife, Nina, would find out. It’s safe to say things continued to take a turn after that night.
The plot got more interesting just because there was more action happening, but I truly just finished this book to finish it. I don’t think it’s something people should spend their time on, if I’m being honest.
I was first interested in this book after hearing a lot of people rave about it and recommend it. So, I was surprised that right from the beginning, I really wasn’t enjoying it.
Apologies to all for a more negative review, but sometimes it’s just like that. No hate to Ms. McFadden for writing this, but my rating is 2.5 stars… maybe 2.
Also!!!! I’m not a big thriller reader, so maybe I’m just not a fan of the genre right now. That could’ve played a part in it, but I’m sticking with my rating.
I’m looking to read more thriller, suspense, and horror, so I’m eager to try out different authors and see if I find an author or a few books I really enjoy. I’m not completely out on Ms. McFadden just yet — I have her book, “Never Lie”, on hold at the library after someone recommended it. We’ll see!
